GOING GLOBAL: Feminist Porn Travel Guide

The annual Feminist Porn Awards are upon us and performers, directors, academics, and fans from around the world will be traveling to Toronto, Ontario for the 10th Annual Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards. For many travelers, this will be their first time entering Canada. We’ve created a travel guide for those traveling abroad for the first time, and gathered some tips from seasoned attendees and savvy sex-positive travelers. (Most of this advice comes from US->Canada travel, so if you have more tips please leave them in the comments!)

Feminist Porn Travel Tips

1. The Obvious.
Don’t forget your passport. If you live in an area with two International airports, double-check triple-check that you’re headed to the right one (we’re looking at you: SFO/OAK). And give yourself a good 3 hours prior to departure to make sure you don’t miss your flight. If you’re driving the distance, make sure your car and registration information is up to code, and do some homework to look up requirements for vehicles when crossing the boarder.

2. The Private.
If you’re bringing equipment, prevent theft by transporting it in an unassuming package, such as cameras in golf bags. Better yet, throw the clothes in the checked luggage and keep your most expensive items with carry-on, where you can keep an eye on them. Make sure to get to security with plenty of time for baggage check or other TSA issues. If you’re trans, the TSA has posted considerations and resources for Transgender Travelers. As in other countries, working in porn carries a stigma and combined with something like having prior arrests may impede travel. Though we haven’t heard reports of porn films or sex toys being confiscated from past travelers, it may not be wise to advertise them. This year’s awards will be glass butt toys fused onto an engraved mount, so unless you pack it in a checked bag, be prepared to explain your artistic trophy to a TSA agent. Having a copy of the awards ceremony program packed with the toy can help assert that it is not contraband.

3. The Comfortable.
The weather in Toronto is predicted to be about a 58 degree high and 40 degree low. Pack accordingly. Toronto is a metropolitan city with a great variety of food and activities. Map-out the location of your accommodation to the planned events to determine walking or driving distance. If it’s too cold or too far for a walk, hailing a cab is easy. As the saying goes: In Toronto, the cabs hail YOU.

4. The Savvy.
Let your bank know your travel plans, to avoid them putting your card on hold. You can use your card to withdraw Canadian money from an ATM, but the foreign transaction fee can be extremely expensive so try to only do it once — and know your withdraw limit; if it is rejecting your withdraw, you may be requesting too much. Some businesses accept American dollars with change given in Canadian. And most businesses accept major credit cards, but contact your company or bank to verify what the charge is for out-of-country purchases. In general, the exchange rate is pretty decent. Bars are less likely to accept cards, so you might want to have money on hand for the after parties. If you have Canadian money left over, your US bank will exchange it free of charge, but not the coins.

5. The Fun!
Try to attend as many events that interest you, but pace yourself! Don’t overdo it with drink or excitement. Check out Twitter’s #FPA2015 hashtag for tweets from the attending performers and producers, and plan on lots of dinner and brunch meet-ups. Check out all the events, and try the poutine.
