ETHICAL PORN FOR NEWBIES STUDIO GUIDE

FeaturedImage-PornGuide

“I believe there’s a lot of room and need to create adult content that’s respectful and powerful… I think it’s the perfect place to become political. It’s a place where money, sex, media, and ethics converge.”
-Shine Louise Houston, Pink and White Productions

Welcome to another reason to love the internet!

Originally created as communications tool for governmental purposes, the web was soon taken over by the bastion of technological conquerors, porn. Amongst the myriad of memes, cat themed media and social networks, porn continues to forge the way for some of the most innovative and profitable uses of technology. This can be both beautiful and overwhelming if you are new to the world of porn and still donning your proverbial training wheels on the information highway.

“Where do I start?” you may be asking yourself.

  • Are you looking for porn that respects both the people represented in it and the workers who produced it?
  • Are you looking for something that is rich in diversity without tokenizing difference?
  • Perhaps you are in the mood for something that is feminist, queer, sex-positive or presents bodies that fall outside the gender binary?
  • Do you value chemistry over the mechanism, and a vision where performers’ passions and pleasure are top priority?

Well, we are here to help!

Ethical porn goes hand-in-hand with ethical consumption. If you want to be sure performers were fairly compensated, practiced safer sex, and consented to have their work shared, the best way to do this is to #payforyourporn.

The studios featured on PinkLabel.tv make a direct commission when you rent their film, which means they can keep doing what they do. We’re all about bringing you the good stuff… independently produced adult videos by the industry’s leading filmmakers. So who are these people and what makes their work so special?

Studio role call please!

THE QUEER VANGUARDS

CHERYL DUNYE
“Cheryl Dunye wrote, directed and starred in her first film which was the first African American lesbian feature film, THE WATERMELON WOMAN. It was awarded the Teddy Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and best feature in L.A.’s OutFest, Italy’s Torino, and France’s Creteil Film Festivals.”

Perhaps one of the most ground breaking directors in queer and lesbian cinema as a whole, Cheryl Dunye was the first black lesbian to direct a feature length film. Dunye has received numerous national and international honors for her work in the media arts. Her fourth feature film THE OWLS, was celebrated at national and international film festivals in 2010. Her third feature film, Miramax’s, MY BABY’S DADDY, was a box office success and played at theaters nationwide. Dunye’s second feature, the acclaimed HBO Films, STRANGER INSIDE, garnered Dunye an Independent Spirit award nomination for best director in 2002. In 2010, Dunye crossed over into adult film with her international hit Mommy is Coming a sassy, raunchy, romantic sex comedy set in the edgy underground of Berlin where love and taboo affairs collide.

PINK & WHITE PRODUCTIONS
“Pink & White is dedicated to producing sexy and exciting images that reflect today’s blurred gender lines and fluid sexualities.”

You may or may not have heard of Pink & White Productions, however, if you are a queer porn aficionado, it’s more than likely you have heard of their first film The Crash Pad. This feature length film has screened at various international film festivals to sold out audiences and was the recipient of the first Feminist Porn Awards’ “Best Dyke Sex Scene.” Director Shine Louise Houston took the world by storm with this blockbuster in 2006 and hasn’t stopped since. The Crash Pad quickly became a household name associated with authentic, queer sex that is sometimes sweet, sometimes aggressive, but always dripping hot. In 2007, Pink & White launched the web series, CrashPadSeries.com, a web series, membership site and follow up to The Crash Pad with immense success. CrashPad releases weekly video updates of queers getting down in the most notorious apartment in San Francisco. You can view some of the fabulous scenes a la carte from the website in the Crash Pad Series Studio. Houston’s background in fine art film (as in celluloid, old-school style) shows in the craftsmanship of her work and the creative artistry she uses to capture the passion between individuals.

POINT OF CONTACT
“These are the true stories… sexual diaries… told in sweat, cum and pixels… by people you may or may not recognize… to watch their sex lives unfold… and who fucks whom… click now to connect to…”

Pink and White Productions expands their mission to improve the world of adult cinema by providing opportunities for alternative voices. Conceived in 2009, Point of Contact fostered up-and-coming filmmakers through a micro-production model equipping individuals with a small budget, camera, and guidelines to enable them to produce their own four-part series. Once their work was shot, the final content was edited by and distributed on PinkLabel.TV, where a direct percentage of the sale goes to the filmmakers. You may recognize a few familiar faces here such as Tina Horn, James Darling and Cyd , who went on to start their own projects.

TROUBLEFILMS
“Courtney Trouble is a filmmaker, adult performer, photographer, queer rights activist, DIY genius, and an award-winning feminist pornographer.”

Truly one of the vanguards of queer porn, Courtney Trouble has been producing indie smut for over a decade! TROUBLEfilms captures queer sex at the root-level showcasing the fluidity of genders, voracity of sexualities, and a whole lot of insanely hot people fucking. Trouble continues to produce the paramount films whose popularity has transcended the cult market, acquiring mainstream appeal and several Adult Video News nominations. Consider this an official invitation to the wildest underground party where great music is playing, the fashion is outrageously stunning, sex can — and is — happening at every given moment, and Courtney Trouble is your host. Welcome to TROUBLEfilms!

SILVER AND GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS

ANNIE SPRINKLE
“Annie has been a sex worker of all sorts, a pioneering adult film director/performer and a professional photographer. She’s the first porn star to have earned a Ph.D., her work is studied in major universities internationally, and she’s shown at the best museums and galleries.”

Are you a history buff who likes to start off straight at the source when it comes to porn and feminism? Then let us introduce you to the work of Dr. Annie Sprinkle. Sprinkle started off her porn career in front of the camera during the Golden Era, when porn played along-side mainstream blockbusters, had high budgets, and was shot on film (that transparent stuff that used to go in cameras before there were iPhones)! She soon became an adult sensation and eventually, the Godmother of Feminist Porn. Whether you learned about her work in a gender studies classroom, have one of her marvelously large tit prints, or have seen her lovely performance art work, her videos are a must-see for the academically-inclined who have an appreciation for quintessential timepieces and collectors of feminist history. Add a splash of good ole’ Bay Area sexual mysticism, and Sprinkle’s work is downright iconic.

EARLY TO BED PRODUCTIONS
“Chicago’s feminist sex shop teamed up with artist Carolyn Caizzi (winner of Fatale Media’s Real Lesbian Sex contest) to produce two queer porn movies.”

Working with real-life couples & play partners, Caizzi wanted to represent authentic queer sex and add to the growing body of smut that celebrates diversity of sexual desire, identities and bodies. The action and scenarios were a collaboration between the director and the talent to allow the actors to express themselves and their sexuality fully. Her movies have a home grown quality.

DISORDER DESIRE PRODUCTIONS
“Disorder Desires Productions was founded by queer Swedish Feminist Pornographer, Marit Östberg. “
Since making her debut as a porn-film director in the acclaimed porn compilation Dirty Diaries, Östberg has become part of Europe’s queer feminist porn scene, directing and acting in work that pushes ideas of who and what porn might be for. Her background as an activist and journalist makes her an important voice discussing and writing about sexual politics in Swedish media the last decade. Her films had an unfiltered quality about them that reflect her journalistic prospective. The sex is intense, visceral, loaded with power-play, and so intimate you feel like you are directly involved.

THE FEMINIST GAZE

THE KEYHOLE SESSIONS
“Urban Peepshows”

Sonya JF Barnett founded The Keyhole Sessions to champion healthy sexual expression through various public events, celebrating the union between sex and art. From life-drawing that highlighted kinbaku and simulated sex to paparazzi-style nude photo sessions, Urban Peepshows are TKS’ latest creative outlet. Hailed as one of More Magazine’s 50 Fiercest Women, an Utne Reader Visionary, a TEDx Fellow, and a Toronto Hero, Barnett has been creating award-winning erotic shorts since 2012. Her first series, Drips Clicks Squirts, was Barnett’s debut as an iPhone pornographer, using a 3GS. She has since moved on to an iPhone 5 with Because I Want You to Watch {2013}, and her latest, No Artificial Sweeteners, both honored with a Feminist Porn Award. Barnett creates with a clean conscience and a filthy mind.

BLUE ARTICHOKE FILMS
“Jennifer’s mission to create better sex film is an integral part of her feminist sexual expression. She believes that sexual freedom is an essential component of women’s freedom. And that creating beautiful, hot films that turn women on is possible, safe, and necessary.”

Director Jennifer Lyon Bell has been making waves in the independent film world pairing her superb cinematic quality with her feminist ideals. Her initial inspiration came from the absence of erotic imagery geared toward straight women in mainstream porn. She was soon compelled to cast handsome men who both straight women and gay men could both visually enjoy while prioritizing the portrayal of the relationship within her films. The psychological and emotional context of Blue Artichoke Films are given the same weight as the sexual, which is what makes Bell’s work both incredibly unique and popular.

INDIGO LUSH
“Indigo Lush is a small production company working to make quality erotic films for straight women. The result is unusual or often amusing short films dealing with female sexuality.”

This company from down under specializes in exploring the sensual eroticism of sex — where women’s pleasure is of the highest priority. Director Ms. Naughty brings her personal pleasures to her films with believable scenarios, decent acting, good-looking guys and realistic, emotionally connected sex. Her work offers an in-depth and arousing display of the powerful elements within female desire. The rich complexities of vanilla sex have never tasted so good!

Lightsouthern
“LightSouthern produces fresh, beautiful, sexy, real Australian stills and videos. It is our approach that is revolutionary. We put our models on a pedestal. We worship them.”

We’re pretty sure that feminist porn might be one of Australia’s biggest exports. Adding to the canon of ethically and professionally produced work, creative director Michelle Flynn uses her 10 years of industry experience to produce quality product that goes on to ‘tell a story’ of women who feel good about themselves.

NaughtyNatural
“Real California hairy girls shooting themselves.”

NaughtyNatural Studios specializes in body hair focused pornography from a woman’s perspective. Self-made model and pornographer Nikki Silver curates the site/studio and is always looking for new avenues to explore within this fetish. Though NaughtyNatural’s niche is hairy porn, the simple, raw authenticity the models and Nikki bring is appealing to anyone with a penchant for women with a wild streak in them.

PETRA JOY
“I like to show men as the object of female sexual desire as there is a lack of male pin-up culture that is aimed at women, rather than at gay men. I choose to embrace taboo subjects such as male bisexuality and the prostate as an erogenous zone for (heterosexual) men.”

If you are looking for something a little on the wild side and outside the box in terms of the “made for and by straight women” model, consider the work of Petra Joy. Petra has over two decades of film-making experience which absolutely shows in the quality of her work. Joy dives deep into the fantasy world combining her cinematic skills with an adventurous approach to representing the objects of sexual desire. Give it a peek, I dare you.

SENSATE FILMS
“Slow porn.”

It just got a hellava lot hotter down under… PinkLabel.tv is proud to host the award winning work of internationally acclaimed Sensate Films. Founded by Melbourne-based Gala Vanting who is an award-winning erotic film producer, sex worker, BDSM practitioner, educator, pleasure activist, and erotic imaginist. She draws from a diverse background in the sexuality and brings a conscious queer feminist approach to her work. Central to all of this is the core value of intimacy and the democratization of sexy. In the slow porn movement, producers give special attention to the production process, holding themselves to the standards of other ‘slow’ movements and focussing on the wider impact of our work on our contributors, our audience, and ourselves. By valuing the sustainability of energies and ethics in what they create, Sensate Films hopes to change the way erotic imagery is experienced.

FTM FUCKER
“Gay, straight & queer FTM porn created by James Darling”
FTM FUCKER is owned, operated and directed by award-winning FTM porn star James Darling. After receiving countless messages about where to find more hot trans guy porn, it was obvious that there was demand for an FTM centric movies. FTM stands for female-to-male transsexual, though many performers identify simply as men or identify somewhere between or outside of the gender binary. FTM FUCKER seeks to create an environment where trans men’s sexualities and bodies are celebrated in a respectful and affirming way by providing a glimpse into the vast universe that is trans male sexuality.

HANDBASKET PRODUCTIONS
“Handbasket Productions is a radical, oppression-aware media collective focusing on queer culture, trans experience and sex-positivity.”

Founding member Tobi Hill-Meyer made waves with her visionary hit Doing it Ourselves and in 2012 was awarded the Feminist Porn Awards’ “Emerging Filmmaker Award.” Her original objectives were simple: to produce representations of trans women’s sexuality by and for trans women. This collective continues to push forward in a grassroots way, serving as an inspiration for activist-driven porn. It challenges the homogenizing effects of mainstream’s limited view on trans sexuality and provides an alternative business model for producing porn.

MMMMMANCANDY

HEAVENLY SPIRE
“Heavenly Spire, directed by Shine Louise Houston, focuses on masculine beauty and sexuality — and how it manifests on different bodies — in a unique cinematic style.”

Is the artistry of a video is just as important as the passion within it? Do you have a taste for the masculine? Shine Louise Houston’s Heavenly Spire is a must-see for your masculine eye candy cravings. Muscly men giving bearded blowjobs, the meeting of the sweet tender lips of FTM porn super star James Darling and Quinn Valentine, steamy cock stroking, and boys having fun with toys, do not escape the gaze of Houston’s lens. What makes Heavenly Spire different from Houston’s other works is the playful handling of color and depth where Houston takes on a rare-to-porn creative and experimental use of both. Think of this as a contemplative survey of light where jerking off is the subject. If only still-life drawing classes were this intriguing!

T-WOOD PICTURES
“T-Wood Pictures is a small San Francisco-based, safer sex, educational porn production company bringing together a diversity of trans and other queer men.”

Do you think men are hot? Well so does T-Wood Pictures! If you are a lover of transman action, gay bath houses and safer sexy time, T-Wood Pictures is for you!

She has won awards for her films and performances, exhibited explicit whore-positive work in venues from a former Army barracks latrine to the SFMOMA, and shown her cervix internationally (in homage to the great Annie Sprinkle).”

Perhaps some of the most creative use of modern video technologies we have seen in some while, Sadie Lune seduces us with concept driven work that is both romantic and literally dripping with sex. Her work is edgy, erotic and highly thought-provoking, and has been exhibited in some of the largest fine art establishments on the West Coast. With Feminist Porn Awards’ Heartthrob of the Year and BBW super star April Flores as his wife and muse, Batts crafted a psycho-sexual journey laced with powerful visuals that take you for quite the ride. Batts put the Hollywood cliches through this lens like a blender. Out of the meat grinder of Batts’ mind, adult stars, celebrity sex tapes, runway fetish shows and reality television are processed into the beauty that is Artcore. His work oozes with the pop appeal you would expect from one of Hollywood’s avant-garde photographers and has the high gloss finish of a cherried-out low rider.

CREAMY COCONUT

MAD SCIENCE STUDIOS
“The raw footage is said to have first surfaced publicly after the reclusive scientist bartered it for six bottles of laudanum, a vector network analyzer calibration wrench, and a live lamprey.”

A taste of humor and industrialism conjoined in movie form. Mad Science Studios explores some of outlier territories of human behavior with regard and disregard to historical reference. Hysteria, petticoats, pegging, construction site sex, and strong cock vibrators are just a few of the topics addressed in the bizarre yet wonderful films from the mind of a mad scientist.
