QUEER VISIONS: Filmmaker Cheryl Dunye’s BLACK IS BLUE, a Short Film on Black Transmale Identity

PinkLabel.TV is proud to support the work of queer filmmaker Cheryl Dunye, director of The Watermelon Woman, and more recently, the explicit raunch comedy Mommy Is Coming, now streaming on PinkLabel.tv! Help her continue bringing her vision with a donation to her upcoming short film, BLACK IS BLUE.

Over twenty years ago, Cheryl Dunye (who Newsday has dubbed “the Lesbian Spike Lee”) begin her filmmaking career with the short films: She Don’t Fade, The Potluck and the Passion, and Greetings From Africa. The result was outstanding success and increased the representation of black lesbian identities in film. And she hasn’t stopped since. Cheryl says of her newest film:

“After my recent move to the Bay, I find myself at the crossroads of another personal and political discovery with the vibrant black transmale and masculine of center communities that lack visibility within queer media and cultural production. Inspired by the work of the Brown Boi Project, the writings of Dr. Kortney Ryan Ziegler, and a handful of others, I created BLACK IS BLUE as a short film exploring the everyday racism and transphobic experiences in the lives of these black men. For me the short film format is one that provides an artistic space for me to work within a community developing ties for collaboration on projects in the future. It also functions as a small scale take on a possible feature film.”

BLACK IS BLUE is about a 30-something black trans man, who is on his way to begin his shift as a security guard when he sees a previous lover, Deja, whom he had known prior to his transition. As his watch unfolds he becomes more restless and paranoid and wonders if Deja has come to out him. Confused, he comes face to face with her and more importantly himself.
